Virtual Book Club: It Sucked and then I Cried

I started reading Heather Armstrong's writing back in 2004. At the time, I had just moved to Miami with my fiance. Truth be told, even if Tim hadn't proposed to me on July 22, 2004, the day we were SUPPOSED to leave but didn't because he PROPOSED, all my shit was already packed into the U-Haul truck. The one with our buddy, Champ, plastered on the side.

I was in a new city. No friends. Nothing to do.

So, yes. I Googled.

I Googled "Best Blogs" and somewhere on the list, toward the top (I'm sure), there she was. Dooce. I read a few of her posts and couldn't stop. Her writing was honest and open and funny and heartfelt. And at times it felt like I was reading ME. I was like an addict, drunk on witty & pithy writing, and I kept going back for more.

The affair lasted the four years that Tim was in medical school and then I stopped reading her site. Cold turkey. Not for any other reason than that I was IMPREGNATED, and HUGE and PUSHED AN 8 POUND HUMAN OUT OF MY BODY. And then was immediately consumed by said 8 pound human.

So when I noticed that her book was available in paperback, I bought it and immediately noticed the "New York Time bestseller" sticker on the cover. (WOW! Heather, rock-steady, yo!) It Sucked and Then I Cried: How I Had a Baby, a Breakdown, and a Much Needed Margarita is an excellent read. Easy, hard and very Dooce. And for those of you who don't know what that means, to quote the L.A. Times, "Heather B. Armstrong is kinda like the Howard Stern of mommy bloggers."

I identified with many of her tales. The good, the bad and the ugly... but not quite that ugly. This girl's got some chutzpah! And did I mention that she's pretty funny?

The book is definitely worth the read. For mothers, to know that the shit that we're feeling? We're not the only ones. And for fathers, so that they can know the shit that we're feeling... and can have some insight on this bittersweet irony we call MOTHERHOOD.
